The cost of travel can sometimes be a deterrent. But in reality, while some travel costs are set in stone, there are ways that you can reduce your spending along the way. From transportation to accommodations to activities, we’ve put together some ways you can save as you plan your next getaway.

Destination

Visiting popular or trendy places can be fun, but you can find substantial cost savings if you choose to travel to non-popular destinations. This strategy could save you money on lodging since the demand for rooms is less in non-touristy locations. It can also offer cost savings on activities and entertainment. Smaller towns tend to have lots of outdoor activities and other free things to do.

Flexible Dates

Be flexible on your travel dates. Try searching for deals first, then scheduling your vacation around the deal dates. Sometimes choosing a different week or traveling during the week vs. on a weekend can result in substantial cost savings.

Transportation

Train rides are still a thing and can be a great scenic alternative to air travel. wload off of driving. Trains are equipped with WiFi, food cars, and quiet cars for those who need a little silent time. Depending upon your destination, you can choose from commuter routes or you can choose from a list of you take your own car, you will also save on car rental fees.

Train rides are still a thing and can be a great scenic alternative to air travel travel. Trains are equipped with WiFi, food cars, and quiet cars for those who need a little silent time. Depending on your destination, you can choose from commuter routes or you can from a list of Amtrak railway journeys. These journeys are all-inclusive so you’ll know your vacation cost upfront.

There are several bus companies that can get you to your vacation destination. This includes Greyhound, Megabus, Boltbus, Flexibus, and others. These buses offer services throughout the US. Megabus also offers services abroad. Just to give you an idea about the cost savings, a bus ride from LA to Vegas runs approximately $100 round-trip. You can also catch a bus from Washington, DC to NYC for around $60 round-trip. Both routes travel from downtown to downtown so you’ll be right in the middle of all the action when you arrive so you won’t need a car to get around.

If you must fly, try flying off-peak. You can opt to fly midweek or at not so popular hours like 6:00 a.m. or 11:00 p.m. Flights during this time may be less expensive. You can also set up airfare sale alerts from Scott’s Cheap Flights, Secret Flying, and The Flight Deal so you can hear about deals early and before they’re gone.

Once you arrive at your destination, try using public transportation, biking, scooter rentals, or even walking for additional cost savings.

Accommodations

The closer you get to your vacation date, the more expensive accommodations can get. So book early to find the best deals on lodging. Keep an eye out for deals and discounts based on longer stays. Some hotels offer a free night’s stay when you make reservations for a minimum of 3 or 4 nights. Again, look for weekday stays since weekends are popular travel days and rates tend to be higher during those times.

Vacation home rental sites like Airbnb and VRBO have some amazing accommodation options, but beware of additional fees that can increase your total rental cost.

Activities

Consider low or no-cost activities such as walking or hiking trails. City, state and national parks are also fun and sometimes have lakes and Japanese gardens that you can enjoy. City parks are free, but state and national parks tend to charge by the car and range from $25 - $35 per carload. If national parks are your thing, the National Park Service Annual Pass is a must! The annual pass costs $80 and pays for itself in approximately 3 - 4 visits. If the park is not drivable, the National Parks Annual Pass covers park entrance for up to 4 individuals. If you don’t want to get a pass, you can always look into the free park days .

If your vacation is on or near the coast, don’t forget beaches. Pack a picnic lunch, pay for parking, and enjoy a full day of fun in the sun and water. Beaches also make a great background for vacation photos. Don’t forget to stay for the sunset.
